Are you ready for it? It’s coming. Back to Campus time will soon be upon millions of households. College students going off for the first time, or last time, or somewhere in between time.
Fortunately it’s going to be a few years before my little one has to head off to college, but I remember going off to college for the first time. I had to do so much shopping. I already had clothes, but I needed new towels and sheets for the bed and…well, that was it for my major college purchases. My freshman dorm was more like a prison cell than a luxury apartment. It had a built in closet, dresser, some storage cabinets and a desk with an overhead lamp all in utilitarian wood paneling (well, not the lamp). They provided a chair and bed. There was about three square feet of wall space for decorating. And that was about it. Keep in mind this was also in the days before the Internet was mainstream, so a laptop was not a necessity.
Going off to college is a little different these days. Colleges across the country are competing fiercely for incoming freshman. They are trying to make the on-campus living experience as awesome as possible. Dorms that are more like apartments mean your kids can’t just show up with some clothes and a laptop. You are going to have to supply more than ever. And you know what? Why not make those things quality purchases. Something that might have a chance of surviving the college experience and lasting until they graduate. And move into a place of their own (and not back home right?) and that are also a great value.
