5 Ways to Pamper Your Pooch

by Heather

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, have you been busy making preparations? According to History.com, 62% of adults in the United States say they celebrate the holiday. Be it through candy, gifts, flowers, or other delicacies; we are coming out in droves to celebrate a day of love.

It is important to celebrate the one you love every chance we get, if there is a special day set aside for just that, I’m game! But, what about the other important people in our lives? Our children, family, friends… our furbabies?

This Valentine’s Day, I’ll be taking the time to celebrate the fury pups that round out our family and show us unconditional love and support every day of the year. This year, I’ll be celebrating Felix and Oliver and invite you to join in the fun!

5 WAYS TO PAMPER YOUR POOCH ON VALENTINE’S DAY

1. Visit the Dog Park

Some of my friends live in areas where there are dog parks on every corner (okay, I may be embellishing a bit). There are others that have never heard of a dog park. I have to admit that growing up, I had no idea this was a thing. People walked their dogs or had fenced in yards and that was that. Where we live now, the closest dog park is about 20 to 25 minutes away. Since we have a large fenced in yard, it’s more of a hassle to get the boys ready, get them in the car, listen to Felix cry for 20+ minutes, and then play in the park. Yes, I said hassle, it’s much easier to open the backdoor and let them out to play. But on special occasions, it’s time to step up your game, and take the kids out for some real fun. It’s time to pack a few treat, grab the Frisbee, and take the boys out for some fun in the sun. Do something special for your furbabies, load the car and head out to your local dog park for some fun.

2. Enjoy a Spa Day at Home

After a day full of play, it’s time to relax with a spa day at home! A candlelit bath may not be the way to go but that doesn’t mean we can’t spoil our pups with a warm bath, some freshly scented wash, and extra snuggles and love while we dry them off. Bath time is the perfect time to make sure their toenails are clean and cut (if you do your own at home), brush their teeth, and check their ears. Once they are dry, I have them sit on my lap and I brush their coat while rubbing their ears to give them a little extra TLC. We like being pampered and our pups are no different. My guys love a shiny, clean coat, and when I brush them, it’s not abnormal for them to small sighs that let me know they are enjoying our time together. Don’t forget snuggles at the end!

3. Surprise Them with Homemade Dog Treats

It’s no secret that a number of store bought dog treats aren’t made with the healthies of ingredients and some may actually do more harm than good. Because of the breed of one of my pups and some of his intolerances, we don’t keep store bought treats in stock. Yes, that means when they receive treats is few and far between, but that also means we are often giving them bits of peanut butter or other small “human” foods to compensate for our lack of doggy biscuits.

This really isn’t the best way to go about things and I noticed it increased the amount of begging our boys do when we are eating meals. I’ve resolved that by making homemade dog treats! Now, I know that this sounds like an extra step, an unneeded task, and the list goes on and on. The truth is there are really simple recipes out there.  What I do is set a day to do some baking with my little and we make cookies or brownies and I break out the ingredients for our pup treats at the same time and we make them a batch. Then I store them in an airtight container and break them out as needed. Do a simple Google search; you’ll see how easy it is to make something special for the fury beasts that make our day!

4. Do Something EXTRA Special

Now, this one could go so many directions. Seriously, the sky is the limit. When you leave for work or head out to run an errand, leave the television or radio on; the noise is comforting. Does your pup love car rides? One of mine does and the other is not a fan, put Fido in the car, roll the windows down a bit, and let him/her enjoy a little road trip. Pick up a new toy or dog bed to let them know that they are special! My guys aren’t a huge fan of toys. In fact, the few that they have are permanently stored under our couch because every time I bring them out, they shove them right back under. They do however love snuggly, fluffy doggy beds. Confession, my pups love spending time on our couch. I love snuggling them but I’m not a huge fan of dog fur all over (yes, I know this is inevitable when you have pets) and if I am being totally honest, they can leave our furniture smelling less than fresh. As long as we have a comfy bed for them in our television room, they take full advantage of their own space. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to add a little fluff and love to their lives!

My dog is spoiled rotten. We always have his favorite treats, and he gets car rides frequently (if the car door is open he jumps in and refuses to get out till he gets a ride), and when he looks a little down we take him to petco which he loves.
