The Good Dinosaur, Disney•Pixar’s latest film, has finally arrived on Blu-ray and DVD. I was able to see it when it was in theaters, but the hubby and our daughter were never able to find the time. Those pesky holidays and all with the turkey and the tree and the shopping, etc. kind of got in the way. So I was super excited when it came out and I was able to share it with them.
I have to admit I was a little unsure about the movie when it first came out. Continuing in the great tradition of Disney movies (I know Pixar and Disney are technically separate, but they are related) someone dies early on. Knowing my daughter, I knew she would be upset by this part. She’s a sensitive kid and some parts of the movie ended up being a little more than she could handle, so hiding in daddy’s arms ensued. For my part I like it more each time I watch it. Seeing Arlo grow and build confidence is something that resonates with me as a mom. The scenery and backgrounds look so realistic it is hard to believe they are digital animation and not live footage.
The DVD release comes with some awesome extras as well. First off is Sanjay’s Super Team, the short that accompanied the movie. I loved how personal this story was (it brought a tear to the hubby’s eye). It also contained several fascinating behind the scenes segments. The filmmakers went onsite to an actual cattle ranch to see how a ranching family works and interacts. But frankly my favorite was the Recyclosaurus. This was a contest by the film crew to create the coolest dinosaur from junk. Seeing the Pixar campus and offices was cool, but seeing the creativity of these people frankly just makes me jealous.
