I don’t know about you, but I’m increasingly finding physical media to be redundant. Does that sound elitist? I know. I’m such a snob. I remember the days when we had to find more and more storage for our DVD collection. First, they took up a couple drawers. Then a shelving unit over the big TV. Then they expanded into two wall shelving units. Then they started getting stacked up wherever we could find room.
Nowadays? They fill up some boxes in a spare bedroom. Don’t get me wrong, I still buy the Blu-ray or DVD of movies I really like, but only if they come with the digital copy. First thing that happens is I redeem that code so I can watch it on my favorite streaming service. Either on my phone or tablet or computer. And anymore, some of the digital copies have all the extras that the Blu-ray has. Special features, deleted scenes, alternate versions. Ahh, I remember the days when I could switch seamlessly from movie to movie thanks to our 5-DVD changer. Now, I can just select a new movie from the menu or search.
So, by now you’re probably asking yourself what this has to do with anything? Yes, we all love Netflix and VUDU etc.
Well, I ran into an interesting conundrum recently. My family went on a weekend road trip recently. For the trip itself I loaded up some movies from VUDU onto a laptop for my daughter to watch on the road. But what about when we got there? There are plenty of times on a weekend getaway or longer that sometimes you just want to kick back and chill with a good movie. We had a couple opportunities for that, but no good options on TV, no DVD player (and no DVD’s) and no one really wanted to crowd around a computer screen. Google Chromecast Streaming Media Player to the rescue (I wish we had one of these with us).
So, what is the Google Chromecast Streaming Media Player? Simple. Plug it into an HDMI port in the TV at your destination, open your favorite streaming app (like Netflix or VUDU) on your phone, and cast from your phone to the TV. It’s that simple. And you can still use your phone for whatever you need to, like texting or phone calls (does anyone actually use their phone for calls anymore?). Or even if you are at home, start watching a movie in one room, pause, move to a new TV and start casting to the TV in the new room (yes, it’s that affordable). Already have Google? Just say “Ok Google, play Game of Thrones on the living room TV” and watch it show up. There are so many possibilities, it’s almost mind-boggling.
So, head on over to Best Buy today and get three (or four) Google Chromecast Streaming Media Players today. You won’t be sorry you did.
