Last month I received an invitation to screen Bad Moms and interview talent from the film. The funny part is I completely missed the part about interviewing talent from the film as I was hung up on the name and possible scenarios in the film.
As the mom of a 6-year-old, the majority of my television viewing time is spent enjoying Mickey Mouse, Princess Sofia, PJ Masks, and the like. We sneak a little Food Network and HGTV into the mix but that is about the extent of it. I hadn’t seen any advertisements for Bad Moms, I had no idea who was in the movie, and suddenly I was going through the “what ifs” in my head.
Let’s be honest, a lot of films featuring “moms” are stereotypical or hokey at best. Or even better, they don’t really focus on the female, she’s just a sidekick or an afterthought to the writers. I was hesitant at best and this hesitation only increased as I started to do my research and noticed that the movie was written by two men.
Then I looked at the cast list and became really confused. Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, and Christina Applegate. We’re talking A-List actresses. I couldn’t imagine them in a crappy film. And umm… I didn’t see a large number of men making up the cast. Then I watched a trailer, giggled a bit, and decided I would go.
By the time I got off the plane in LA, I was as well versed in Bad Moms as I could be and I was ready for some fun. I still had a question or two about two men writing the film but I knew that I would get the chance to ask about that so I put on my party smile and headed to work.
After enjoying Cocktail Party, a surprise welcome from the cast, and an amazing surprise performance from Flo Rida … THANKS STX Entertainment and Bad Moms! … I settled into my seat and waited for whatever was about to happen. The lights dimmed, the movie began, and I laughed from the first scene to the final credits.
Bad Moms IS the film of the summer and one that we have been waiting for … forever!
In today’s mom chronicles we all have the extensive list of “must accomplish” tasks before heading to bed. Grocery runs, bills to pay, drop off and pick up from practice, work, dinner, laundry, and so much more. At the end of the day, instead of counting sheep before bed, we all run through our mommy must dos checklist to make sure everything was accomplished and often, at least in my case, go to bed feeling like a failure regardless if we checked everything off the list or not. The grocery run mean less snuggle time with the kids. But, had we not grocery shopped then it would have been fast food for dinner and fast food is the devil. Hmm, but had we had fast food then we could have worked in 30 more minutes of reading and homework. The cycle is never ending and what we, as moms, are primed to think about day in and day out.
We all strive for perfection, whatever that may be. We try to give our family the best, do less with more, and achieve greatness. We try to epitomize perfection, or our view of such, and run ourselves ragged on a daily basis trying to achieve just that. The truth of the matter is, it’s impossible. Perfection doesn’t exist and we all know it but that doesn’t mean we will stop trying to achieve it.
Bad Moms looks at motherhood, the daily expectations, the moms that make up the playing field, and it runs with the storyline. Do you want to know what happens when everyday moms decide to say “screw it” and give mommyhood a metaphorical finger? What happens when Good Moms decide to go rogue and see what it’s like to be Bad?
Bad Moms is the perfect movie for a group of girlfriends, mothers and daughters (once they’ve reached that level of grandma and mom), and even spouses or significant others (at least in my case).
Yes, there are moments when this film takes stereotypes to the extreme. Yes, there are times when some may blush over the number of times the F bomb is dropped. Yes, you’ll leave the movie and likely feel compelled to become more involved in the PTA.
Attention MOMS, this is YOUR feel good movie of the summer. It is okay to schedule a sitter, grab a drink, and let your hair down for a couple of hours all in honor of experiencing BAD MOMS.
Who knows, it could just change your outlook on parenting! ;)
