Like many, I grew up watching classic fairytales like Cinderella, Snow White, and Beauty and the Beast from the perspective of writers employed by a well-known mouse. These are stories I’ve watched countless times over the years and though my view of the stories have changed as I’ve become an adult, there will always be a special place in my heart for each and every one. Thanks to the fairytale seed that was planted long ago, I’m always interested in another take on an old favorite and Shout! Studios Three Wishes for Cinderella was a rather pleasant surprise.

First, it’s important to note that I’m not a fan of dubbed movies. I often find myself staring at the actor’s/actress’ mouth instead of focusing on the storyline. Set in snow-covered Norway, I was immediately swept away by the story and didn’t find the dubbing to be distracting at all. I fell in love with the setting, it reminded me of a rustic Winter Wonderland. But let’s not forget the story!

In this arctic adventure, our princess is vastly different from many stories that have been told. Cinderella is a spirited young woman looking to explore and adventure while searching for her happiness in the confines of a dysfunctional family. She still talks to animals and takes care of household chores but what she really wants to do is go hunting with the boys and that is where she meets our prince.

My favorite part of the movie is watching Cinderella evolve from a mousy servant to a confident young woman. And, although I’ve always loved Fairy Godmother, I didn’t feel like anything was missing from the film with the arrival of three acorns instead of a woman with a wand. While the general story is the same, there are variances from the story many of us grew up with.

Three Wishes for Cinderella gave me all the warm and fuzzy feelings and is certainly a movie that we will watch again and again. Pick up a copy for your home library today!
