The BFG ~ In Theaters NOW
“It’s not as good as the book.” You hear that a lot. Sometimes from people who haven’t even read the book. And they’re right, some books should never have been turned into a movie (I’m looking at you Starship Troopers) because they were just so complex that you have to really dumb it down to get it into a 2 hour movie.
But you know what? Sometimes it is as good as the book. Or maybe even better. Sometimes they can take a book that you remember as a child, perhaps a book that scared you a bit, and turn it into a movie that touches you again as an adult. Something that makes you want to pick up the book and rediscover that place you visited as a child. Or maybe even makes you want to read something that you apparently completely missed out on as a child. Something that resonates with you because you remember feeling that lonely, even when you were surrounded by family.
Something like The BFG.
The BFG is the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book of the same name. That same Roald Dahl that you thought wrote only one very very famous book that was turned into not one, but two movies, was apparently a very prolific writer. Who knew? Apparently everyone but my husband (I read all of his books over the years and have even introduced them to my six year old). The BFG is the story of Sophie, a very lonely girl living in an orphanage. One late night she happens to discover the BFG, an immortal giant, who spends his nights bringing dreams to children. The BFG also happens to be a very lonely, though for completely different reasons than Sophie. The story then follows their adventures to Giant Country as they work to overcome the reason for their loneliness. I won’t go into any more details, since I don’t want to spoil it for you.
While in L.A. for The BFG Red Carpet Premiere we had the opportunity to see the film not once but twice. The first time was with a group of locals and everyone applauded at the end of the screening. The second time was at El Capitan Theatre and talent from the film, including, Mr. Steven Spielberg was in the audience. I couldn’t help but think back to our time with Steven Spielberg and Ruby Barnhill, Mark Rylance and Jemaine Clement, and Penelope Wilton and Rebecca Hall earlier in the day. Needless to say, the second viewing was that much more … more personal, touching, intense, and beautiful. I laughed, I cried (seriously, it is someone embarrassing), and I smiled throughout the entire film.
Simply put, The BFG was a great movie. It made me want to hug my daughter. It made me want to steal the copy of the book that I gifted to my little one before I left town. It made me want to see the movie again.
