It’s that time of the year … SUMMER! While we applaud the end of another successful school year and take vacations to parks, amusement parks, or beaches we need to keep in mind that summer is also the season of America. My father was in the Army and served during the Vietnam War so these holidays have always been very important and celebrated in our home over the years. Now, even though my father has passed, I want to instill such traditions and values in my little one; I want her to be just as patriotic as I was raised to be. Now the difficult part, how do I get my 4-year-old involved in the celebration of America when she doesn’t understand these holidays or their purpose? Hmmm.

As a parent I have learned that it is important that any form of learning be accompanied by fun. My daughter learned the Pledge of Allegiance in preschool and we recite all the time but what about the rest? Do our little ones fully understand the purpose of the holidays? No. Do they fully understand what it means to be American? No. Then again, I’m not sure all adults could answer yes to these two questions. For me, I’m happy that my daughter knows that she is American, whatever that means to her. I’m thrilled that she lights up when she sees red, white, and blue and she is able to compare it to the flag we proudly display outside our home, an article of clothing that she is wearing, or the American flag keychain on mommy’s keys.
