14 years ago a legend was born. Today, that legend is reborn.
Over the weekend I was in Los Angeles for a sneak peek of the Ratchet and Clank Movie. Don’t worry, you will be hearing about that soon. But when I was leaving I was also elated to receive a copy of the Ratchet and Clank game for the PlayStation 4. Released on April 12th, you can play it now too. Timed to coincide with the release of the movie, the new game is a re-imagining of the original PlayStation 2 game with plenty of new elements to keep it fun. As soon as I got home I was eager to rip open the package and let the kids experience a new take on a game I love.
Insomniac Games has a true love for Ratchet and Clank and it shows. Combining gameplay elements from the whole Ratchet and Clank series, the Ratchet and Clank Game shares it’s new graphical look and origin story with the movie but it’s still pure fun. My boys were able to jump right in and play it. For a Ratchet and Clank veteran like myself, Insomniac recommends playing it on hard.
Ratchet and Clank Game Tips from Insomniac Games:
- If you’ve played Ratchet and Clank before, play the new game on HARD.
- Be sure to visit the Gadgetron vendors for Raritanium upgrades
- Customize the D-pad for even better gameplay
- Collect card packs, trade in duplicate rare cards to unlock special bonuses
- If you’ve maxed out a weapon’s level try the other weapons! Each kill adds XP to your weapons, so if it’s maxed out, you’re missing out on XP!

I absolutely loved the game. My whole family got to take turns playing the game and finding all the hidden little gems. In addition to all the familiar game play elements (yes, Clank still rides on Ratchet’s back giving him special abilities) there are also plenty of new elements and weapons. My favorite was the pixelizer, a weapon that gives your enemies an 8-bit appearance (talk about old school). The game has plenty in common with the movie (coming to theaters April 29th), so you should definitely go see it when it comes out. Trust me, you and your kids will love it (but I digress).

If you are looking for a family friendly game that has heart, challenges for all, lessons to learn, and plenty of explosive action, then this is the game for you.
