So, by my count there have been three film versions of the Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. There is the original TV special from the 60’s (a direct adaptation of the original story), the live action movie from 2000 and now the 2018 digital animation version. I’m not going to lie, of the three, the newest one is my favorite. Let me tell you why.
For one, there is no great dark mystery about why the Grinch doesn’t like Christmas. It’s a reason most of us can relate to in one way or another, loneliness and exclusion, on Christmas of all days. That is something relatable, maybe not to the extreme of the Grinch, but we have all been there at one time or another and can understand.
Two, he likes his dog. That may sound silly, but the Grinch treats his dog like I like to think most people treat their dog, like family. In this crazy world we live in, I like that.
Three, the new take on family. Donna Lou Who is a single mother of three. Cindy Lou Who’s request to Santa about her mother is the selfless act that helps heal the Grinch.
Bonus, the movie (and the digital version) includes three mini-movies, one featuring the Grinch and Max and two featuring the minions.
