It’s 1984, the drones are everywhere. Flying above gunning down the last remaining humans. Prowling on the ground crunching over piles of human skulls. Fortunately that drone filled future didn’t come to pass. The future that did come to pass is slightly more cheerful. No I’m not talking about predator drones, I’m talking about various civilian drones that you can mount cameras on. Whether it’s following you along your nature hike or getting the bird’s eye view of your kid’s birthday party, this is the Summer of the Drone. Yeah, that’s my own title. Like It? Patent Pending. Or trademark, or something. Whatever, I’m not a lawyer. I’m a mommy and I like cool new gadgets that let me take pictures of my family. If you have a father in your life that likes cool gadgets then they will also love you for this too. What exactly am I talking about? The 3D Robotics Solo Drone.
First off, this thing is smart. Get this, it has two computer processors, one in the drone and one in the controller. This is not like one of those RC helicopters that you fly into the ceiling over and over (or the wall, or the light, or the dog). No more trying to keep it in the air while taking a picture, you can just concentrate on taking the picture. You can make it circle a location, define a start and end point, make it follow you…How cool is that?
Second, you can attach a GoPro camera to it (no, there isn’t one included). The drone lets you fully control the camera and actually stream video right back to your mobile device. So if you want to scale that cliff, go ahead. Just turn on the camera, have it follow you and it will record your every foot and hand placement. Don’t worry, mine will be following me safely as I walk along the picturesque trail on the ground. And if you hurry, you can even get a free spare battery for the drone. That’s a deal.
