Did you know that animals suffer from food allergies just like humans do? Did you know that they can go from being fine and dandy eating a food one day to becoming physically ill from the same type of food the next? I can’t say that I have a lot of animals in my life, I am kind of partial to dogs, and that is why we have two puppies. They are absolutely amazing, adorably cute, and have brought our little family full circle. Since I am most familiar with pups/dogs, we will talk about that. It is always best to stick with what you know!

Now, let me note that I know food allergies are fairly common in dogs; however, I didn’t realize they could become allergic to a food that they had been eating for months and months. That is kind of crazy! I mean, I know that I developed lactose intolerance in a matter of hours but that was because of a surgery that changed my system. I say all of this in past tense because I have learned a great deal about pups, the foods that they eat, and their allergies in the past week to week and a half.

Before we get into that, you may remember that last month we were introduced to Stewart Pro-Treat Freeze Dried Blends. The pups really enjoyed them, so much so that they are gone. Stewart must have the ability to read the mind of dogs or something because as we were getting close to the bottom of our treat tub, Stewart asked us to introduce out pups, Felix and Oliver, to their Pure Freeze Dried Dog Food.

When our new box of goodies arrived, the first thing that I noticed is that the Freeze Dried Dog Food patties are huge. There were 8 large patties in our box along with helpful, succinct directions and information about the food, and I love that inside the box is a resealable bag that supports fresh eating. What I love even more is that I am able to pronounce the names of the ingredients and most, not all but most, are things that my family eats on a daily basis.

Now, I have to be honest in sharing that when the box first arrived and I looked at the patties I decided that I was going to use them as treats for my pups. We have been using the same food for over a year with Felix and since December with Oliver and all has gone well. We try not to make drastic changes to their diet because this could have serious adverse effects. I was breaking off little pieces of the first patty and rewarding the dogs on occasion. Now I have to be really honest in sharing that my original plan was curbed.

All was going well until our baby pup (a.k.a. the youngest) starting having problems and began having serious defecation problems. Since he is still young he sleeps in pin. He started waking us up between 2 AM and 3 AM crying and we would go in to find his pin and the floor covered in feces. After walking him, cleaning up the mess, and going to bed, we would wake up to a new mess in the morning. At first we thought he just had a tummy bug of sorts. Then, we thought he was getting into something we didn’t know about. Finally, I was convinced he was angry with us and acting out. After my husband patted me on the head and reminded me that the dog probably wasn’t angry with us for having him go to bed at night we decided to call the vet. To make a short story even longer … the final outcome … FOOD ALLERGIES!

After receiving our vet’s blessing, we have switched out little guy to Stewart Pure Freeze Dried Dog Food, and things (knock on wood) have been noticeably better. So far he hasn’t been waking us up in the middle of the night with a surprise and the need to go outside. We haven’t had to clean up messes multiple times a day. And most important, hopefully his little tummy is starting to feel better. Our pets are just like babies, just because they can’t tell us something is wrong doesn’t mean they don’t have ways of showing us. We just have to pay attention to the signs.

A heartfelt thank you to Stewart for introducing out family, especially Oliver, to something that may help him maintain a healthy diet and digestive system!

I did not realize this with pets and allergies. This sounds like a good product.

This sounds like something our dog would love. It is amazing how many allergies our pets can have. Thank you for sharing
