Christmas is about tradition. Family, friends, food, lights, trees, and perhaps a present or two! When I was growing up, there were always certain events in our family that heralded the holiday season. The Saturday after Thanksgiving we would go to the local Christmas tree farm and hunt for the perfect tree. Then we would go out to dinner before returning home to decorate the tree as a family while listening to Christmas music. Helping dad put up the Christmas lights (which mostly involved me drinking hot cocoa and pointing). Putting up all the trains (a whole separate event from the tree that involved sanding down all the tracks and putting out the buildings and cars and deciding which engines to use); grandpa was a Conductor so this was huge! Watching certain Christmas specials on TV (back in the age of 3 stations and if you didn’t see it the one time it was on you had to wait until next year).
And there was one constant that went with all those traditions. Hickory Farms. The very first tradition was going to the mall to get a Hickory Farms gift box (or three). Summer Sausage. Smoked Cheddar. Crackers. Peanut Brittle. This was in the dark ages of course, so you actually had to go to the mall, which was about 45 minutes away, and it was only available around Christmas. These days there is this handy invention called the Internet, so you can order online all year round at hickoryfarms.com. For Christmas tree decorating we had a plate of summer sausage and cheese. When my dad was putting up lights I would be right there (watching) with my hot cocoa and peanut brittle. Going out to get the Christmas tree my dad would carry a summer sausage in his coat pocket and cut us pieces with his pocket knife as we looked for the perfect tree. I’m not sure that would pass the “cleanliness” test these days but it worked for us. It’s funny the things that stick with you through the years, how they help you create memories, and how they stay with you through the years.
All of our traditions started with something from Hickory Farms. And as my daughter grows up we are sharing those traditions with her; we may skip the pocket knife though. I’m excited that Thanksgiving is upon us because that means Christmas tree time is coming. We enjoy every holiday that we have but I’m ready for lights, laughter, family time, and Hickory Farms!
