The Allure of Hand Pies
Before we delve into the specifics of savory hand pies, it’s essential to understand what makes hand pies so irresistible to people of all ages. The concept is simple but ingenious: a handheld, pastry-wrapped package filled with delectable ingredients. This handheld aspect is what makes hand pies so appealing. They are portable, easy to eat on the go, and can be customized to suit a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences.
A Taste of History: The Origins of Hand Pies
Savory hand pies are by no means a new creation. In fact, they have a rich history that dates back centuries. The concept of wrapping fillings in pastry has been a part of many different cuisines, from pasties in Cornwall, England, to empanadas in Latin America. Hand pies are the result of this global culinary cross-pollination.
The idea of portable, savory pastries filled with meat and vegetables can be traced back to medieval Europe. These early hand pies, known as “pyes,” were a practical solution for travelers and laborers. The pastry shell provided a convenient way to transport and consume a meal without the need for utensils. Over time, various cultures and regions put their own spin on hand pies, leading to the diverse range of flavors and styles we enjoy today.
