I was asked to share my favorite Christmas. I’ve been thinking about it for over a week. Focusing on a tradition, a moment in time, a special gift and … I keep coming up short. I thought about trying to share a Christmas from before my dad passed away when I was 14-years-old but the truth is, I don’t remember them that well. Don’t misunderstand, I remember my dad, I remember celebrating Christmas with him, and I remember events over the years but specifics escape me. One thing that I remember clear as day is my dad decorating the house for the holidays. We had a leather door hanger that was shaped like a Christmas Tree. It had bells on it and dad would fix it to his belt and dance around as he decorated. There was always a mixture of embarrassment and laughter but thinking back now … it was amazing!
Fast forward 26 years and things are much different and yet, some things are still the same. The holiday season is always a frenzy; especially when you have kids. Luckily, we have stayed close and our families always come together during the holidays to celebrate the year and family. Is there a favorite Christmas? No. Is there a perfect Christmas that I remember? Most definitely not. What we do have are traditions that have been built over the years and hopefully some of them will be passed on to our kids to share with their families.
We are all adults now, married with our own kids, busy lives, and households to take care of but once Thanksgiving comes, there is a shift. We all have always lived close to each other; in fact, its safe to say, we’ve all always lived within a 10-minute drive from each other. We often spend time together and talk every single day. Once Thanksgiving hits, our families are almost inseparable. From shopping to baking and watching movies, there is always a family SOMETHING going on and we are all part of the fun. We drive around and see lights, we go to the zoo, we go Black Friday shopping (online now with the pandemic), and, and, and … I could go on and on but you get the point. WE SPEND TIME TOGETHER!
Where the memory making really comes into play is the week before Christmas. The week is spent finishing up shopping and wrapping gifts. Of course, the kids run around playing, eating extra sugar, and watching movies while the adults talk about the latest anything and everything and go through rolls of tape like there are endless quantities (we always run out). Then, a few days before Christmas, we get together to bake our final round of Christmas cookies in preparation for the arrival of Santa.
On Christmas Eve, the festivities begin early. Each year, we all gather at one house on Christmas Eve and spend the next two days together. There are good eats, Christmas movies galore, and a family style meal. Sometimes we have to add in a little baking because someone broke into the cookies. As the day is coming to a close and the house is settling in for the evening, the kids take a bubble bath, get the cookies ready for Santa, and then snuggle in for reading of The Night Before Christmas. All the littles fall asleep in the same bed, there are currently four but we have one more on the way, and they get to enjoy the dancing sugar plums while the adults take a little time.
Once the kids are officially tucked in, there is often a mad dash for last minute wrapping. Sometimes, if we are lucky, things are calm and we play a few hands of cards and enjoy some adult time. BUT, if I am being honest, there is normally wrapping! Then, everyone is dispersed their own beds … or blowup mattresses and we all catch a few winks before the littles wake up!
Christmas day is filled with presents, good food, cooking, laughter, reminiscing, and fun. It’s all about the celebration of togetherness, realizing how lucky we are to be together, and love. Are there gifts involved? Yes. We have always celebrated Christmas with gifts. More importantly, we celebrate another year of being able to be together.
If I’ve learned anything since my dad died, it’s that time isn’t promised and life can change in an instant. My family is the most important thing in my life and every Christmas that we get to spend together is my favorite. Here is wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from our family to yours. Be safe, be healthy, and be filled with love. And don’t forget … BE PRESENT.
