I love experimenting with makeup, but the truth is, I haven’t always been fabulous at it. Everybody must start somewhere, and like Oprah, I started from the bottom. It took a lot of practice and perseverance, but now I’m the seasoned makeup professional you see before you today. Just kidding; I am much better at it though. Want to know how I did it? Choose High Quality Makeup and Tools
Although some cheap makeup can be great, you can’t be too careful. If you’re just starting out, it’s always better to use high quality makeup and tools to get a lovely effect. Not only will high quality makeup be easier to apply, it’ll give a more professional finish. Read reviews online to find out what’s worth the money and what isn’t. Try to read reviews from people with the same skin type as you to make sure the product will suit you. You’ll need a good set of brushes too.
Practice Makes Perfect
As I mentioned before, practice makes perfect. You won’t be a pro after the first few tries, and it may even take months before you see big improvements. The important thing is that you continue to try your hardest and improve your technique. An eye for detail is essential.
Watch Tutorials
Tutorials are one of the best things out there for improving your makeup skills and techniques. You can always find short videos explaining anything you need more help on. This might be something small, like how to create a better eyebrow arch, for instance. It might just be that you’re looking for a specific makeup look to create; there are plenty of those out there! Watch as many tutorials as you can and make sure you practice along with them too.
Read Books
Reading books should help you to perfect your technique just as much as tutorial videos. You can find specific books on makeup brands, or books explaining how to achieve certain looks. Lauren Conrad even has her own book. You can refer back to your books as often as you need to in order to get it right.
Take a Class
Feel as if you need more one on one guidance? Take a makeup masterclass! LivingSocial and Groupon offer these at discounted prices. However, you can just as easily head over to your favorite makeup counter and ask for some tips and a makeover. You’ll have to pay of course, but you’ll get some free samples and invaluable tips.

Don’t Be Afraid to Try New Things
If you want to become a pro at applying your makeup, you can’t be afraid to try new products and looks. Even if you don’t think it’ll suit you, try it and you might be surprised. I used to think that I couldn’t pull off eyeshadow, but I’ve recently wore purple glitter on my lids and loved it!
