GhostBed ~ Unearthing the Bed in a Box

Don’t judge me. For the longest time we coslept with our daughter. A practice born of desperation, it was a hard habit to break. But as she reached the ripe old age of six we kept hearing more and more “I want to sleep in my room.” The first obstacle was cleaning her room. Since she slept with us her room (and her bed) had become the catchall area for her stuff. So once we managed to bin up all her junk and get her room to a usable state, we tried to let her sleep in there a few times without success. Inevitably she would wake up, come out to the living room where we were still awake and crawl into my lap. Once we got as far as 3 am, at which point we woke up to find her crying next to our bed, wondering why no one had heard her crying in her room.

So we had to readjust the strategy. We started by talking to her about why she woke up. She said she missed having someone to snuggle with. Hey, we have two dogs that LOVE to sleep in bed when we let them. So problem number one was solved by letting one of them (the good one) sleep in bed with her. Then she said her bed wasn’t comfy like ours was. Well, we weren’t sure how to get around that. I mean, our bed is a memory foam mattress that we probably paid way too much money for, her mattress was the cheapest one at a big box store. We weren’t sure how to get around that obstacle.

Then we found GhostBed. I wish we had known about GhostBed when we got our mattress. GhostBed is the first memory foam mattress we have seen that doesn’t require a second mortgage to afford. So we put the bargain store mattress in the basement and unboxed the GhostBed in my daughter’s room. You heard me right, we unboxed it. GhostBed comes in a box, and it’s cool. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a heavy box, but it’s a box nonetheless. Instead of maneuvering some heavy, huge, unwieldy thing through the halls, hitting the walls banging into everything and knocking over lamps, you just have a box to move. The hubby managed to get it into our daughter’s room, took it out of the box and set it on the bed. Then we proceeded to open it. The mattress itself is vacuum-packed in a plastic bag and then rolled up. So the first step is carefully cutting away the tarp like material keeping it rolled up. The hubby thought it would spring open like a joke canister or something so he had the rest of us out of range, just in case. But it was not a problem, it just slowly uncoiled. Next was breaking the seal on the vacuum-packed bag. Again, carefully cut the bag and watch the bed slowly expand. It was like one of those dinosaur sponges that expand when you get it wet. But don’t soak the bed in water that is NOT how this works. Once it is out of the packaging you just let it naturally expand by itself. You can’t even tell it was rolled up like a little sausage. It just looks like a normal comfy memory foam mattress. It reminds me of the memory foam mattress that we definitely paid too much for but love and my little one loves it.

Now she sleeps in her fairy room most nights, on the comfy bed, with our dog. I’m actually kind of jealous. I wonder if the hubby will be offended if I go sleep in there with her?

I really need a new mattress but what I don't understand is why they have to be SO expensive? I mean they're made by machine, probably packed by machine so why the huge price tag? Do any of your readers know?

It is so cool the way these open up! I have an older Nature's Sleep bed and it did the same. When it's time for a new one I'll definitely be looking into the Ghost Bed!

Mattresses are so expensive, and there's nothing worse then sleeping on a bumpy old uncomfortable one. This one sounds really good. I am glad your daughter readjusted to sleeping in her own bed! :)

lol My brother is 15 yrs younger than me and I remember the night-time struggles my mom had because she got him use to going to bed with her and then HE wouldn't go to bed without her!! So my kids from day born had a set STRICT bedtime routine!
