Who needs a drone?
Definitely not me. What the heck would I do with a drone? I used to think that way about any number of things. Pressure cooker? Pfft. Air Fryer? Pfft. Then I got them. And started using them all the time. Do I have a drone? No. But the more I sit here and think about it, I realize the many useful things I could use it for.
Now if you’re like me, when you think drone, you are probably thinking those cheapo toys your kids, or in some cases you, have. You know. They charge in about two minutes. And you get about 2 minutes of flight time. Also known in my house as “bouncing between the floor and ceiling trying to keep the darn thing level because it keeps going left, I adjusted, now it keeps going right, what the heck is the deal with this piece of junk” time. Or maybe when you hear drone you immediately think back to the second season episode “Q Who?” of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The DJI Mavic Mini is not one of those. This is a real drone.
So, what could I use a drone for?
Have you ever had leave in your gutters? I have. It’s an interesting experience when you finally realize that the reason the rain is completely overrunning your gutters is because you have small trees growing where the rain should be going into the downspouts. If I had a drone, I probably could have checked them out before I had to get out on a 30-foot ladder to remove trees.
Or have you ever tried to find the perfect place to build your dream home? You arrive at the 50-acre plot of land in the country with nothing, but an overhead map picture and you must figure out how to look at this enormous piece of wooded land. If I had a drone, I could get a much better idea of the lay of the land. I have looked at a lot of land lately. On the realtor web site, they look great. Then you get out there and start walking through the woods and realize you are staring at a hill that no normal car could drive.
Or maybe I just want to figure out where the heck these kids are coming from that keep walking out of the woods behind my house and through my yard. I know there is something back there (I mean another neighborhood, not some portal from the netherworld spouting out demon-children).
So, what makes the DJI Mavic Mini so different from the cheapo toys?
How about a stabilized gimbal camera? What is that you ask? It’s a camera that makes you’re your pictures or video are smooth and stable no matter what the Mavic Mini is doing.
How about QuickShots? These are elaborate preset flight patterns that let you shoot awesome video with minimal effort.
How about 30 minutes of flight time on a fully charged battery? Get the Fly more combo and you get two more batteries (and a lot more).
