Cooking with Tom & Jerry: The Movie

by Heather

I hate to break it to you. We didn’t really cook with Tom and Jerry. They’re animated characters and don’t actually cook. They don’t actually eat either. Which is a good thing since they can’t cook. We, however, are real people and need to eat. We are also able to cook. Which is good since we need to eat. So to celebrate the Blu-Ray release of Tom & Jerry: The Movie I got on my first official Zoom meeting to make some Tom & Jerry themed snacks.

Thank you Warner Bros. for inviting our family to attend the Cat & Mouse Cooking Caper Event with Chef Rishika and CozyMeal!

So Let’s get cooking!

Cat Lover’s Caramel Popcorn

So the first snack we tackled was caramel popcorn. I never knew how simple this was. And how hard. All you need is some popcorn…duh. Microwave or air popper or stove top or however. Once its popped, spread it out on some parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Then put 1 stick of salted butter, 1 cup of heavy cream, 1 cup of sugar and 3 tablespoons of corn syrup in a medium size saucepan over high heat and stir. Once everything starts to melt turn the stove top down to medium and keep stirring until the mixture starts to turn from white to light tan to a deep gold color. Mix in the 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Then pour it all over the popcorn and mix it all together.

Don’t let it get to brown, this means it’s burnt.

This recipe is super simple. A few ingredients and easy instructions. It’s also hard. We did this cooking class on May 14th. I burnt the caramel. I tried it again that Sunday. I burnt the caramel. I tried to do it with the hubby’s supervision a couple days later. I burnt the caramel. I finally let the hubby do it on his own about a week later. He made it perfect.

Sigh. Don’t tell him I said that. Ever!!

Apparently the key is to keep stirring, without ever taking your eyes off. And the second you see it start to turn that golden color, you pull it off the heat.

Ingredients

  • Small baguette
  • 7 oz Calabrese salami & Prosciutto
  • 8.5 oz Brie cheese
  • 1 bunch each of fresh parsley & thyme
  • 1 red apple
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 3 limes
  • 1 stick salted butter
  • 2.5 oz honey
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • Dijon mustard
  • Garlic powder
  • Black pepper
  • Smoked paprika

Butter and Baguette

  1. Put your butter in the bowl. If the butter is not softened, put it in microwave for 20 seconds.
  2. Add the lime juice, garlic powder, smoked paprika and thyme to the butter. Mix all the ingredients together until it is nicely incorporated.
  3. Once everything is mixed, take a plastic wrap and place the butter horizontally.
  4. Then start rolling it into a roulade (shape into a log).
  5. Make sure there are no air bubbles and you have rolled it very tightly. Twist the end of the plastic wrap.
  6. Put the butter in freezer for 35 minutes.
  7. In another bowl, combine mayonnaise, ½ teaspoon lime juice, 1 teaspoon chopped thyme, honey, and smoked paprika, garlic powder, & dijon mustard to taste. Mix to combine all the ingredients.
  8. Place the herbed mayonnaise in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  9. Cut baguette into thin slices and put in a big bowl.
  10. Toss the baguette with some chopped thyme, olive oil, salt & black pepper.
  11. Line the baking sheet with the baguette and place in the oven at 350° for 7-10 minutes. The bread should be crispy and golden brown.
  12. Take the butter out and cut them in thin rounds.
  13. Place on a warm baguette and enjoy!

Avengers Charcuterie Board, Assemble!!

  1. Cut apple into thin slices. Place in a bowl and drizzle a little bit of honey & lemon.
  2. Chef’s note: This trick helps keep the apples from turning brown.
  3. Core the top of the bell pepper to remove the stem. Cut one side of the bell pepper so it becomes flat. Cut the pepper into thin strips.
  4. Arrange baguette on the board. Add slices of the herbed butter on the baguette.
  5. Take out one slice of prosciutto at a time and fold loosely to resemble a rose. Then place the prosciutto on the baguette.
  6. Place the stipes of apples and bell pepper around the board.
  7. Cut the brie cheese in half (if it is round) and place on the board.
  8. Put the herb mayonnaise in a small serving bowl and place on the board.
  9. Break the caramel corn into small pieces and place around the other items on the board.
  10. Dig in and enjoy!

What a fun idea for watching the Tom and Jerry movie! I don't think my kids would like this one much, but the adults would! I would make them a kid's version to go along with it. :) Thank you so much for sharing!
