Dex is not a super hero. He is not a vampire. He is not a post-apocalyptic teen warrior/dreamboat. Dex is an ordinary 12 year old boy. An ordinary 12 year old boy who happens to be an excellent “cooker” (as my seven year old daughter put it). However like many young boys, Dex does want to get the girl. Unfortunately (in his eyes) he is not a big buff jock likely to get the girl, so he puts his culinary skills to good use at his front yard food stand to save up the money to buy a gym to impress the girl. But when he discovers his grandmother’s restaurant is in trouble, he decides to put his cooking skills to the test to earn the money to help her out and along the way discovers that you don’t need to be the big buff jock.

First, my daughter loved the story. As an aspiring “cooker” she is always begging to help make dinner. And I mean literally, on her knees, hands together, begging to help cook dinner. Now she also does this when the hubby is doing dishes or sweeping the floor so I always kind of just figured she was a little “odd” like that, but hey, if I don’t have to do it, we all win. But after we read Dex with her, the pleading took on a new urgency. Now she wants to become a great cooker and open up a food truck in the front yard. Yes, it’s November and no, our front yard is not shaped correctly for a food stand, much less a truck, but I love her enthusiasm.

So last night we were talking about making breakfast for dinner. This is a favorite ever since we got our awesome Masterpan. (Seriously, this thing is awesome; it’s like a one-stop-shop for cooking.) And up pipes my daughter. “I want to creation it.” That’s her way of saying she wanted to put her unique spin on it. Keep in mind the last time we let her “creation” it, we got crunchy eggs, but we love her enthusiasm. So we said “Keep in mind we are going to have some hot oil going and we don’t want you to get burned, but how would you like to creation it?” “Let’s cook it all together.” So follow along until next time when we go into the fun (and messy) details of how my 7 year old daughter came up with Baby Ninja’s “Breakfast Hashbrown Casserole Bowl Dinner for Breakfast in a Bowl.” Yes, she named it too.

We start them out young! Please pardon our clutter. ;)

Until then, do you have a little “cooker” in your home? Pick up a copy of Dex by Sheri Lynn Fishbach and let your little one’s imagination run wild!

Heather, we have a lot of clutter too, haha! Thanks for sharing this. My daughter cooked pancakes all by herself this morning, she might like Dex.

I love that my daughter is starting to cook on her own, but I hate it because I know she is getting bigger lol. I know it's wrong of me, but that is the mommy who wants her children to stay little forever in m me. Then they start to fight and well that goes out the window lol.. Thanks for sharing your great post with us! Love it!
