Captain America: Civil War Review #CaptainAmerica

by Erik

Okay, so you need to know going in that this is technically not an Avengers movie. There is no Thor and no Hulk. But pretty much every other earthbound hero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows up in Captain America: Civil War. And a couple new ones. But while there is a wide cast, this movie is very much a continuation of Captain America’s story.

Now if you haven’t been following along, I would highly recommend going out and watching the first two Captain America Movies as well as both Avengers movies. Captain America: Civil War draws heavily from all of them.

In the aftermath of the various disasters wreaked upon the Earth (Invasion of New York, destruction of SHIELD Headquarters, the events in Sokovia), the governments of the world have decided that Super Heroes need regulation. It all comes to a head after an Avengers mission in Africa goes wrong and innocent aid workers are killed. Wracked with guilt, Tony Stark and others close to him support the UN’s regulation effort. Captain America, having been part of a supposedly benevolent organization, is a little more skeptical. Okay, he’s a lot more skeptical. When it appears that his old friend Bucky commits an act of terrorism, Captain America sets out to save him, while Iron Man sets out to capture him. You can see where this is going.

Which friend does Steve Rogers side with? And who is the mastermind that has set all this in motion? Well you will have to see the movie to find out, but you are in for a wild ride. I still don’t think that Tony would have sided with the government on this one. But I have to say that Marvel has once again put a moral dilemma straight in the crosshairs with no clear winner. This isn’t good guys vs bad guys. This is good guys vs good guys. And that kind of moral ambiguity can be hard to watch sometimes, but I know I am going back to see it again. And this is only the second Marvel movie I can say that about (don’t worry, I’ve seen them all at least 20 times).

Side note: Be sure to sit through the entire end credits. You’ll thank me later!

BUT, before we go … an amazing video highlighting the female stars in the film including Scarlett Johansson (“Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow”), Emily VanCamp (“Sharon Carter / Agent 13”), and Elizabeth Olsen (“Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch”)!
