So I’m a little paranoid. Not a ton, just a little. I mean, I know that Google and Facebook know more about me than I would probably want (and probably the NSA too), but there are limits to what they know and have access to because that is limited to what I choose to share. But the reality of what they COULD have access to is increasingly getting scarier.
Imagine this scenario. You just got out of the shower, you are walking around the house air drying, but all the window shades are pulled down. Or so you thought. You walk by one window and see that the shade is up. You glance out and see someone with a camera and a telephoto lens pointed straight in your window, taking pictures. What would you do? Call the cops? Sure, hopefully they find the guy before he posts your photos all over the Internet.
Now imagine the same thing, but you sit down in front of your desk with your laptop. Unknown to you someone has hacked your computer and is secretly recording you. Good luck getting the cops to do anything, the hacker is in Lithuania. The next day you get an email saying fork over $400 or see your naked pics splattered all over.
Sound far-fetched? It’s not. This stuff has actually happened. In fact, it has happened enough that the term sextortion has been coined to describe it. And for those of us NOT looking to break into the Internet Porn industry, this could be devastating. This is why the first order of business for me when I got my new computer was a little piece of heavy duty paper taped over my webcam. This is effective, but not very convenient if I actually want to use my webcam.
Fortunately there is a better option. The C-SLIDE Webcam Cover. This little gem attaches to my laptop and has a little sliding window that I can use to cover my webcam when I am not using it. Talk about brilliant. I wish I had thought of it.
