5 Tips for Dressing Your Kids Right for Summer Activities

by Jenn

Summer Clothing for KidsSummer is a time for your children to play and enjoy the warm weather. Just like any season, it’s important to remember to dress your children appropriately for any activity they participate in. Just because summer is a casual season it doesn’t mean that fashion must fly out the door. Before you go shopping, review these 5 fashion tips to make sure that your children wear clothing that can breath and are fashionable.

1: Put Comfort First

Your child is going to spend a lot of time being active. Encourage your little one to run out their energy throughout the day by giving clothes that give them the extra room to move around. Comfort should always come before style for your kids. There are plenty of clothes that are stylish and comfortable, but there are also other options that don’t strike a fair balance. During your active summer activities, make sure you select fabrics that can breath and move.

2: Don’t Forget About Hats

When your child will be spending an extended amount of time in the sun, you need to make sure that they’re protected. Sunburns are all too common during the summer, even when you apply liberal amounts of sunscreen. It you want to protect your child, invest in hats that will match with all of their outfits. This fashion accessory serves more than just a fashion function.

3: Find Name Brand Clothes on a Budget

Take time to find discounted name brand clothing instead of paying full price at a retail or department store. Some retails stores only sell mens Tommy Hilfiger items, but other local and internet clothing stores offer name brand kids clothing at more than 70% off of retail. Shop for clothing online or browse circular ads for sales and you won’t have to break the bank.

4: Buy Clothing Just For Outside

There’s nothing more frustrating than buying your child an expensive pair of shorts just for them to be ruined in the mud. If you don’t want to waste your money, buy clothing that’s just for outside play. Basketball shorts and basic t-shirts are a great option because they can easily be replaced.

5: Dressy and Comfortable

If you have a little girl to dress, a cool summer dress is great for the beach or even for a trip to the mall. Summer dresses are airy, comfortable, stylish, and season appropriate. Just make sure you invest in a pair of cotton shorts for your daughter to wear under the dress if you take a trip to the park to play on the swing set.

Don’t forget about swim wear when you’re building your child’s wardrobe. With the right shirts, shorts, and accessories, your child will feel good and look good when they walk out the door to play with their friends.

Great post! ESPECIALLY putting comfort first! I had a friend who dressed her kids in designer outfits, no matter if they were even going to the playground. She said (and this is the Gospel truth!) that her worst nightmare was that if she died, her husband would put the kids in tee shirts and jeans. I SWEAR she said this, and meant it.

Great Tips. I have a 9 year old and 17 month old baby girl and I got so many sun dresses for the summer and sandals Rompers are GREAT too and of course we have lots of sandals, I agree with you, to try and have outside clothes separate, I tend to not think about that and my daughter ends up getting good clothes super dirty, But thank goodness for TIde 98% of the time I can get it out. Thank you for sharing =)

I think that it is great that you tell people to put a hat on their child. They can not only get a sunburn on their scalp, but it helps hide their delicate faces from sun damage. I think you should also mention that SUNSCREEN should be number one, if you just apply it everyday and get into the habit of it, your kids will thank you for it later.

Thanks for the tips for summer clothes for the kids. Sunscreen and hats are good if they will keep a hat on. 4 of my 5 grand kids are all boys -so expect them to get dirty. Dont dress the girls in frilly dresses for the park - it can be dangerous is they get caught in the playground equipment. And yes girls like to play in the dirt too.
