5 Ingredient Easy Copycat KFC Bowl

by Heather

KFC, specifically KFC Bowls (shhhh this is a Copycat KFC Bowl recipe), was one of the few fast-food restaurants that we visited when I was a kid. You see, I grew up on the westside (for locals) of Cincinnati in a small town. When I say small town, what I mean is the only thing we had in our area was a UDF, Pony Keg (convenience store for the non-locals), bakery, and post office. A trip to the grocery store or any restaurant was at least a thirty-minute drive. Needless to say, fast-food was not something that we ate often.

In my teenage years, we moved to the eastside of Cincinnati and suddenly grocery stores (plural) and restaurants were plentiful. In fact, right after we moved, I’m not sure we ate at home for weeks because we were so busy trying out new places! To say that life was vastly different would be putting it mildly.

Do you know how they say the past comes back around? A few years ago, we decided to make a huge change and moved from the suburbs to the country. Now, the closest grocery store and restaurant is about forty-five minutes away. Needless to say, going to restaurant isn’t something that was do on a regular basis and getting fast-food is a thing of the past. BUT that does not mean we can’t enjoy some of our favorites at home.

Enter … COPYCAT RECIPES!

Did you know that copycat recipes are all the rage? Rage, is that even a popular word anymore? Anyway, I had no idea! Normally I work on a meal prep rotation of simple meals that I have perfected over the years, trying recipes my mom passed down, or coming up with new recipes for the blog like our Chocolate Peanut Butter Animal Crackers Rice Krispie Treats, Banana Bread, or Strawberry Jam. BUT … not today!

I love that copycat recipes allow me to have a little fun trying to match up the flavors from our initial experience. My family seems to enjoy trying out my new concoctions (they love KFC, too!). Creating my own recipes at home allows me to control what is actually going in our food. Last and very much not least, have you seen the cost of fast-food recently? A month or two ago, we were out and about running errands after a doctor’s appointment and decided to grab some food to go. Even ordering, what I thought was cheap, it was over fifty bucks. Yeah, I’ll stick to cooking at home!

Today, I am super excited to share our take on a Copycat KFC Bowl. Sub in your favorites along the way and remember, it is okay to take shortcuts! Life is busy and putting dinner on the table doesn’t always have to be complicated.

What was your favorite item to order from the KFC menu when you were a kid. Compare that to what you order today. Let us know in the comments. I always love to hear the favorites of other people that visit some of our favorite places!

Just coming back to copy the link for my oldest son. He makes almost all of his own recipes (great cook!) but I don't think he's ever made his own KFC bowls and I know he's a fan.

What a great recipe for comfort food, without the ridiculously high price of KFC! Thanks!
