5 Best Educational TV Shows to Help Your Child Learn

by Jenn

Television has gotten a bad rap from most parents. But if the television is used correctly, your children will actually be able to learn and develop skills they may not without the convenience of TV.  While there are several educational TV shows that will help your children learn, here are the five TV shows that will keep the kids entertained while teaching them.

Sesame Street

It is impossible to have a list of the best educational shows without listing Sesame Street. Sesame Street has been educating children since 1969, and the show is as good as it has ever been. Your children will learn something new from Count, Big Bird, Elmo and the other Sesame Street puppets each episode. The parents will even love watching the show for the nostalgia. It airs on PBS. The show has evolved to keep up with trends and technology, so it’s still relevant and a great tool to teach kids basic principles.

Team Umizoomi

Team Umizoomi is one of the rare educational TV shows that focuses on math. Math can be a tricky subject for many children, but they will be able to develop their math skills early by watching Team Umizoomi. It currently airs on Nickelodeon, and the characters on the show use math to solve all of the problems that they face each episode. Check with your cable provider, like www.cable-tv.com, to see if you have the Nickelodeon channel.

Dora the Explorer

Dora the Explorer remains one of the top educational shows on television because it has the ability to teach while also entertaining the children. Dora the Explorer is great for learning about colors, shapes and puzzle solving. The children will even use what they learned during the show to help Dora on her adventure. The show also mixes in several Spanish words, which is a great way to teach the children a second language.

Between the Lions

There is probably no other show on television that delivers as much educational content as Between the Lions. Between the Lions focuses on helping children learn how to read and understand what they are reading. The show has won multiple awards, and it will drastically improve the reading level of any child that watches the show. It airs on PBS.

Super Why

“Super Why” entertains the children by telling a compelling story each episode. Every child watching will learn new words and solve word puzzles during each story. They will then use what they learned throughout the episode to solve the major problem of the story. “Super Why” is a great at developing the reading and problem solving skills in children.

Whatever happened to Barney? I watched my younger brother and sisters learning with Sesame Street when they were growing up, the I watched my son and nieces and nephews watching it as they grew/grow up! The nieces and nephews had Barney to supplement Sesame Street. Too bad we just had Looney Tunes, Captain Kangaroo and Romper Room when i was growing up.
