I have a problem that I have been dealing with for years. I’m a gastric bypass patient that loves sugar. Wondering how that is a problem? Let me explain. Due to the changes gastric bypass patients undergo internally, our bodies are no longer able to break down sugar like others. Essentially, what that means is anytime I eat sugar, I get really sick. I don’t mean sick like a little tummy ache, I’m talking cramping, nausea, sweats, sometimes diarrhea … you get the idea. Do I still indulge and eat sugar? DUH, I’m female (I know not ever female is into sugar). I like chocolate, cookies, pancakes, cake, the list goes on and on. Again, the problem is anytime I eat such products I’m doomed. So is there a solution to my problem? Maybe!

Recently I was introduced to Life & Food’s 100% Pure Raw Organic Yacon Syrup. No idea what it is? Yeah, I had never heard of it prior to this review but I am thankful to have found this product! I read the product description, which we will get to in a moment, but the thing that caught my attention was that Yacon Syrup is a “low glycemic sweetener.” Life & Food suggests that the syrup be added to tea/coffee and other beverages. They also note that it can be added on pancakes and in other liquid mixes. Perfect! I LOVE coffee and pancakes … especially together. 😉

As a gastric bypasser (that’s what I call myself), I am extremely careful when it comes to products that claim to be a sweetener. On day one, I made a glass of lemon water; one of my favorites, and added half a teaspoon of Yacon Syrup. The color made me a little nervous but the syrup added a touch of sweet to a drink that is often rather sour. I added a little more and it subbed in great as homemade lemonade. Does the syrup taste different then sugar? Yes but that isn’t a bad thing, I enjoyed it. More importantly, my tummy didn’t hurt, I didn’t have to lie down for half an hour and whine to my husband about how much pain I was in, and I didn’t have to spend “quality time” in the restroom. WIN! Day two, I braved coffee. I love my coffee with cream and a touch of sweet. The Yacon Syrup added the sweetness that I crave but the flavor wasn’t as pronounced as I enjoy strong coffee. Again, I didn’t feel sick. WIN!

Now, I don’t know about you but we don’t make pancakes during the week because we simply don’t have time. I’ll be adding Yacon Syrup to my sugar free syrup this weekend … come on, I love syrup and it’s local, I can supplement but I refuse to go cold turkey!! 😉 Then, once I master the right concoction for pancakes I’m going after cookies. I’ll let you know how that goes.

The real question is what would you use this natural sweetener, 100% Pure Raw Organic Yacon Syrup for?
