I love yogurt. I have since I was a kid. And that was a long time ago. Well, not that long ago. Wait, let’s put it this way, when I first started eating yogurt, you could probably have called it hippie food. My parents weren’t hippies (born a little before the baby boomers that turned into hippies) but they embraced a lot of do-it-yourself’ish type stuff.
We ate peanut butter that consisted of nothing but peanuts and a little salt (try it sometime, it’s yummy). We grew all our own vegetables and actually canned them. They made applesauce. I should say my parents did all this, I was a little too young to do any of the actual work. But they were both teachers, so they had a financial incentive to do it all (and let’s face it, teachers today still do), but they also had the time in the summer to actually do all the work. I just got to eat all the yummy food.
But one of the yummy things I got to eat that wasn’t homemade was yogurt, and the brand was Yoplait.
And now that I am a parent, I love passing that tradition on to my daughter. To say that times have changed since I was young is an understatement. I would love to have a garden like my parents did, but I don’t have that much space to have a full garden. I also don’t have the time to tend a garden like they did (it was a gloriously huge garden). What I do have room for is a couple garden boxes where I have space for some green beans, tomatoes and cucumbers and that’s about it.
But one thing I can pass on is my love of Yoplait yogurt. It comes in a lot more flavors these days than the strawberry and blueberry of my youth. It provides calcium (20% of daily requirements) and protein that a growing child needs.
When she comes home from school ready to eat anything and everything in the fridge, I know I can grab a Yoplait yogurt right out of the fridge and hand it to her as a better for her snack than chips or a hot dog. When she wakes up in the morning ready to eat anything and everything in the fridge I know I can hand her a Yoplait yogurt while I’m getting my wakeup medicine ready (that’s coffee by the way, for me, not her).
Basically anytime she needs a snack and I don’t want her filling up on junk food (in other words, all the time) I know I can go to a Yoplait. And thanks to the fridge packs I know it’s easy to keep enough on hand that we don’t run out. So head on out to Walmart for a fridge pack of Yoplait yogurt. It’s a snack I’ve been eating all my life.
