It’s called the Greatest Show on Earth. And there is a reason it has earned that name. For 145 years the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has been entertaining generations of families. Young and old alike would flock to see the clowns and acrobats and human cannonball and the tigers and horses and the elephants. Children of all ages would gaze in rapt attention watching someone actually get in a ring with tigers. You would stare in awe at someone walking a tight rope 50 feet above the ground.

I imagine it was amazing 145 years ago.

It is still amazing today.

We were lucky enough to get some amazing seats to see the opening night of Circus XTREME, the latest incarnation of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and we were not disappointed.  I’d love to say the night started off with A and went through the alphabet and ended with Z, but I was so enthralled that I forgot to take notes. So in no particular order:

There was “Taba” with his 16 trained Bengal tigers. Watching Taba make 16 huge tigers lie down and then roll over is an incredible sight. I couldn’t even get my pet cats to do anything like that. There was the Danguir Troupe, the amazing high wire walkers. There was Alex and Irina and their trained poodles. These dogs did some amazing tricks. I’m lucky if I can get my dogs to lay down. The Mongolian Marvels dazzled with feats of strength and agility that were just incredible. My daughter wanted to go down and join in on the trampoline display and try out the BMX bikes. But she was dazzled by the human cannonball, “Mommy can I go do that ride?”

But as with everything else, it must all come to an end eventually. And so we come to the final reason you need to go to the circus. Even if you haven’t been to the circus in years, you need to go now. If you ever want to see the amazing Asian Elephants in the circus, this is your last chance. After this season Ringling is retiring the last of their performing elephants to their elephant sanctuary in Florida. And while I understand it, I’m still a little sad.

So if you want to have an amazing memory for you and your children. Something you will never be able to replace and never experience again. Go. Go now, while you still can.

I've always loved the circus, although animals such as the big cats & elephants have been banned in Ireland. But clowns? Does anyone else find them really creepy?
